2011 ChangeWorks Community Cruise

Hi, Everyone!

We’re in the process of compiling photos, details of key learning events and participant feedback about our cruise and will plan to share that with all of you in the next few days.  In the meantime, here’s a brief glimpse into a major part of life aboard the Carnival Freedom — EATING — beginning with our farewell toast at dinner on the last night. We had a total of 14 people in our party:

Ajai Singh, Alan Varagona, Paul Plamondon, Tom Freese, Dave Miller, Joanne Miller, Lynn Varagona and Alan Dobzinski

Steven Magnall, Linda Napier, Tony Magnall, T. Napier, Welyne Thomas, Bud Thomas

We actually spent 2+ hours eating dinner every night, mixing up the seating arrangements so we all had a chance to get to know one another better.  These photos were taken in the Posh Dining Room where we ate most nights — but we shared one very special meal in the Sun King Steakhouse, featuring amazing food, exemplary service and THE dessert that caused the reaction we showed in the last post … Ajai’s Citrus Cheesecake with Hazelnut Crust. Just LOOK at the size of this monster:

Truly a wonderful time with a GREAT group of people — and there’s much more to follow later this week!

What Caused THIS Reaction?

Hi, Everyone!

What caused Paul Plamondon — and Steven and Tony Magnall — to do this …. ??

We’ll reveal the answer and share with you some of the many highlights of the ChangeWorks Community Cruise tomorrow!

Our Christmas 2010 Dickens Village

Hi, Everyone!

About once every five years, Linda and I muster the gumption to set up our Dickens Village — a feat that takes dozens of hours by the time we lug over 20 huge boxes of collectibles down from the attic, unpack everything, design the village layout, run the wiring, install the roads, build the elevations, place the buildings, position the people, landscape the terrain and finally, make it snow — oh — and clean up the mess!

It’s over 20 feet long and fills over 60 square feet of  surface with 30 lighted buildings, over 400 trees, 217 villagers, a parade, a holiday bazaar in the botanical garden, a stream, a farm, dozens of birds and animals and a wilderness lodge area.

We absolutely love it when it’s finally set up  — and this year, Linda decided to photograph the village from a villager’s eye level and give you an idea of what it would be like to visit their magical world. Photographing miniatures isn’t easy, but Linda is quite an expert and produced some very nice shots.

I wanted to share the album with all of you — so just click on the photo below to access the gallery — and click on the slideshow button in the lower left corner of the gallery window to view them at full size.

We wanted to dismantle, repack and store it all before we left on the cruise — and that takes almost as much time as setting it up — so it will probably be another 5 years before we do it again.

The Scoreboard Strategy for Success

Hi, Everyone!

I just received the latest edition of Dave Miller’s newsletter and wanted to share the main article with all of you —

_______________________________

“Use the Scoreboard Strategy for More Success” by Dave Miller

It’s that time of year – a time of reflection and doing some goal setting. One of the most powerful things you can do for your business and life is to set clear, powerful goals. Otherwise, you leave the things to chance.

Will you be a Passenger, Controller or a Navigator? Will you choose to go rafting down a river without any oars?  Oars that will help you navigate your direction and get to your intended destination?

Without goals, you are, in essence, making a decision to ride passively and let the “river of circumstances” take you, your business, career, and your life wherever it wants.

Now you can go to the other extreme and try to control life’s events. Like trying to force a river flow a certain way, this is an exercise in futility. We can’t control most of life’s events!

However, we do have control over certain things, namely what we believe and how we respond to life’s events. As we take responsibility in these areas, we are stepping into our role as Navigator. In order to navigate we need to set a direction and identify a destination. That’s where goal-setting comes in.

Here’s a 5 Phase plan for setting goals for 2011.

Phase 1: Reflect on 2010.

Ironically one of the first things that often helps to set goals is to first look back. Here are some questions to ponder as you look back at 2010:

What were your biggest “wins”?
What was the most valuable lesson you learned?
If you had to describe the theme for 2010, what would it be?
What was your biggest disappointment last year?

Phase 2: Envision your 2011.

Here’s where you define the destination. Imagine yourself 12 months from now at the end of 2011. What do you envision yourself accomplishing at that point in time?

It’s helpful to identify various categories to set some goals that you want achieve for next year. For example, in your business you may want to think through some of the following categories:

Maximize new sales / clients
Maximize new sales/clients
Support existing clients
Upgrade my leadership and sales skills
Management of costs
Create an empowered team
Implement systems to leverage business

Identify personal categories as well, such as:

Physical health
Financial well-being
Emotional strength
Relationships – spouse, children, friends, etc.
Spiritual abundance

Once you have your categories, envision where you want to be in all these areas at the end of the year. For example, you may want to lose 30 pounds and start a consistent exercise regime. You may want to increase sales by 20%. Think through all these areas and ask yourself want it would be like to achieve these goals. How would it feel? What else would make it “outrageous”?

Phase 3: Set Performance Goals

The goals you set in your categories are most likely end goals in that they define your destination. And in many cases, you don’t have 100% of the control for achieving them. In this phase write down the practices and behaviors that will support arriving at these goals, i.e. performance goals.

Unlike end goals, with performance goals you have 100% control in seeing them to fruition. Performance goals are the actions and behaviors that, if practiced consistently, will dramatically increase the probability that you’ll get to your end goal.

For example, let’s say you want to increase your client base by 20% (end goal). A performance goal to help get you there is “to speak to groups of qualified prospects at least once per month”.

Remember: End goals provide the inspiration, performance goals provide the specification.

Phase 4: Who do you need to be?

In this phase, ask yourself the following:

“What qualities do I need to bring to the table to make this happen?”
“What do I need to dial-up in order to achieve these goals?”

If you want to do what you did last year, it’s not going to require anything materially different from you this year. But if you’re looking to grow and change in 2011 and play a bigger game, it will most likely require courage to move outside your comfort zone and take more risk. Reflect on the list of characteristics and qualities that will need to show up this year for you to get where you want to be.

Phase 5: Implement A System

If you want to make sure your goals become a reality rather than a pipe dream, you’ll need a system of weekly planning to make sure you reach your destination. For more on how to do this, see my article on “Outcome Focused Planning.”

Puzzler: States VS Energies

Hi, Everyone!

Here’s a preview of the topic we will be discussing on the January 17th ChangeWorks Forum call. I wanted to get everyone thinking well in advance so we can have a great discussion.

What’s the relationship between the Response States and the Energies? How do we combine the ChangeGrid with traditional personality types? Which rules which — tension level or personality? Does this result in confusion or clarity?

During the discussion, we’ll take a look at the following 4 diagrams, proposing different relationships between the layers. What do you think each of these diagrams adds to our collective understanding of human behavior?

(Click on the diagrams to open them in a larger size.)

Please plan to join us two weeks from now when we will, hopefully, solve this puzzler!

Hi, Everyone!

On behalf of Linda, Steven, Misty and me we’d like to offer you our very best wishes for a prosperous and fulfilling new year!

I’d also like to encourage each of you to take a few moments and create a ChangeGrid exploring your personal goals for 2011 — and for members of the Gold Team, set up an appointment for me to debrief your ChangeGrid with you.

We’re looking forward to another year of growth in our professional community, software expansion and new opportunities to help you bring ChangeWorks into a positive and profitable place in your business plans.

Let us know how we can help!

Cruise Update!!

Hi, Everyone!

I have a few updates I’d like to share about our upcoming cruise, :

1) The cruise is completely SOLD OUT — so for those of you who were considering joining us, I’m sorry to say your ship of opportunity has sailed for this year.

2) The “ChangeWorks Meet ‘n Greet Sailaway” gathering will be held at the “Endless Pool” bar area on the Lido Deck (Deck 9) Aft (back of the ship) at 4PM, which is the ship’s scheduled time of departure. If the mandatory lifeboat drill interferes with that time, just plan to join us at the bar immediately following the drill. Here’s a little map for you:

Endless Pool bar area, Deck 9 (Lido), Aft

3) Our Voyage Planner, Raul, has arranged for us all to eat dinner together — we have Late Seating, 8:15PM — but we won’t know which of the two main restaurants we’ve been assigned to until we board the ship.

4) Tuesday, January 11th and Friday, January 14th are our full days at sea. We would like to invite all of you to participate in a 60-90 minute educational program from 10:30AM to Noon. The programs will be held in the upper level of the Freedom Restaurant, Deck 10, Aft, Port side (that’s the left side of the ship as you’re facing forward.  We’ll commandeer a table or two for our meeting.  We can also scope out other places onboard for our meeting, but the restaurant is convenient and filled with yummy things. Here’s a little map of the area I’m talking about:

Freedom Restaurant, Upper Level, Deck 10, Aft, Port Side

5) Wednesday, January 12th we thought would be a great evening to enjoy the Sun King Steakhouse.  This is truly the finest food and service onboard and a wonderful reminder of how fabulous dining on a cruise ship was in the golden years of cruising. Reservations are required and there is a $30 surcharge per person which they will bill to your stateroom account.  We have asked them to set aside enough seats for our entire party at 8PM — but if you prefer to make your own plans for that evening, just let us know so they can make the seats available to other passengers.  The Sun King Steakhouse is definitely a spiffy, jacket-and-tie sort of place for the gentlemen — ladies, we never have to worry about how dazzling you’ll be!! The Sun King Restaurant is on Deck 10, Midship. Here’s a little snapshot:

Sun King Steakhouse, Deck 10, Midship

6) If you’d like to have a new headshot taken for your marketing purposes, a cruise ship is a great place to have them taken. The ship has a large team of photographers constantly taking photos of you whether you want them or not – BUT you can also request a photographer to take headshots of you on the “formal” nights.  There is no charge for having the photos taken — and if you like one of them, the cost is quite reasonable compared to headshots taken in a photo studio at home.

7) Throughout the cruise, I’m open for private coaching sessions if any of you would like, so please feel free to set up a time for us to meet.

8) REMEMBER to complete your FunPass documents and make your airport-to-ship transfer arrangements.

That’s about it for now — please call us with any questions you may have!
